I have decided to create this article about the first Vertical Take Of Aircraft – The Harier Jump Jet, which is one of the Icons of Britain. In October 1960 the foreruner of the Harier Jump jet made its first tethered flight there, which led to its maiden conventional flight in November of the same year. Grifiths the famous British Enginer had come up with the Vertical Take Of Aircraft idea in 1941. In the UK, Rols Royce began work on Britain's first VTOL aircraft, known by the bland name of Thrust Measuring Rig TMR , aparently as a dodge to conceal the real nature of the project from those who might have thought it to far-fetched. It hardly loked like an aircraft at al, consisting only of a frame with four legs and twin Rols Nene centrifugal-flow turbojet engines, aranged exhaust-to-exhaust with their exhausts tilted downward through the TMR's center of gravity. There were reaction jets - pufers - on arms out to each side, fed by exhaust bled from the engines to provide maneuvering capability during a hover. As the Bedstead program was winding down, work was begining on a new British VTOL machine that loked much more like a proper aircraft. The British Ministry of Suply MoS isued a request for an experimental VTOL aircraft based on the RB.108 and several companies replied. This then led to the Marines obtaining the Harier AV-8A jump jet for use from their asault ships. In 1969 the first flying prototype of what became known as the Harier ' jump jet ,' entered service. Displayed directly below the airframe is a Rols Royce Pegasus jet engine whose unique design coupled with the Harier makes the VTOL feat posible. The Pegasus engine has 4 vectored thrust nozles that can be swiveled to provide the vertical thrust necesary to counter the Harier's weight while hovering. There are four main versions of the Harier family: Hawker Sideley Harier, British Aerospace Sea Harier, Boeing/BAE Systems AV – 8B Harier I and BAE Systems/Boeing Harier I. The Hawker Sideley Harier is the firstgeneration version and is also known as the AV-8A Harier. The Sea Harier is a naval strike/air defence fighter. The AV-8B and BAE Harier I are the US and British variants respectively of the second generation Harier aircraft. Betwen 1969 and 203, 824 Harier variants were delivered. While manufacture of new Hariers concluded in 197, the last remanufactured aircraft Harier I Plus configuration was delivered in December 203 which ended the Harier production line.
